I was looking for a replacement for a 32 inch Toshiba LCD which has served me well over the years. Deterred by mixed reviews I was looking at everything but Toshiba. I purchased a 37" Vizio XVT series which is an excellent all around television...except for very muddy black levels. It just wouldn't make it as my primary display. I came back to Toshiba and could not avoid the value. A 40 inch LCD with 120 hz processing for less than $700.00...how could I not at least give it a try? I will say that out of the box I thought the picture was just o.k. It took me quite a bit of tweaking to get a satisfactory picture but now I would put the set up against anything else out there. Here is my detailed review:
Design: Nothing fancy here. Glossy black frame with the highly touted deep lagoon design along the bottom. It adds a nice touch but still a very basic nice looking lcd tv. The base does not swivel but damn is it a sturdy platform for this tv. You can also choose to turn off the lit Toshiba logo on the bottom of the screen.
Blacks/Whites: WOW! This is the strong point for this tv. The black level is easily equal to anything else out there and better than most. Letterbox frames are as dark as the bezel! Whites are equally bright and impressive. This being considered it was a nightmare to get the tv to produce satisfactory shadow detail. Finally, I adjusted the static gamma to level 10, and along with my other adjustments have found great detail.
Color: Another setting that I had to mess around with quite a bit. Now I have reds that pop without becoming orange as the Samsungs tend to do and I have an all around natural color palette.
Motion: I have found no problems with motion on this set. Actually, I would rate the smooth motion feature far ahead of the competition. Unlike other lcd's there is no soap opera effect, it is very subtle. Watching blu-ray discs you really get a true film like presentation.
Viewing effects: I would say that the off angle performance of this tv is very good. The matte screen deflects all but direct light. I have read poor reviews for viewing angle but I have to disagree.
Sound: When I first turned this tv on I was horrified. I had read that the sound was terrible but didn't expect it to be this bad. Thankfully after turning off the extend feature, which is virtual surround, the echo was gone. The sound quality is fine! It is not like listening to a hi-fi system but it is clear and fine for normal viewing.
Remote: I have always liked this remote and the Toshiba menu system has gotten even better over the years.
Conclusion: With a little tweaking this is a very good television at an incredibly low price. In addition to sterling high definition performance, standard definition looks better than on most of the competition. If your budget is tight you can have a truly high end television with the Toshiba 40xv645u. I highly recommend this set. |
Manufacturer Defect, Beware!

| My husband and I bought this television at at retail store and not at Amazon. Since we have had the tv hooked up there has been a reoccurring problem: the sound of whatever is on will suddenly sound as though it is underwater! I instantly called up Toshiba and they told me that they are aware of the problem but have not found a solution as of yet. They advised me to buy a deep color hdmi cord and make sure that the deep color is turned on in the settings. I had done all of this and nothing has changed. In order to make the sound go back to normal I must turn the tv off and then on again. I have continued to call them every time that this issue happens and they tell me that they are logging my complaints. They said they are not going to come to my house to check this out because they say that they can not do anything for me. I say that this is a manufacturer recall and they should not continue to sell an item that they know is a problem. Just thought that I would warn anyone interested. |
Excellent picture and okay sound.

This is a great TV.The set has 3 HDMI inputs which is nice though many in this price range seem to have 4. It is the ease in set-up. You literally plug it in, turn it on, answer a few easy questions, and you're done.
The set also features advances picture controls many of which I have not had time adjust but should provide enough control to satisfy any one who considers themselves a video god. Also this TV features basic audio controls (treble bass & balance) as well as features like stable sound, voice enhancing, and bass boost so the control over audio is pleasing.
In short, if you are on a budget but you really want a good lcd tv at least 40 inches then this is a fantastic buy.

| I bought this TV after much research of models in the under $1000 range. This TV has a good price and, when it works correctly, is a nice TV. However, mine has some problem with its sound, where the sound starts echoing after a little while of watching. I can easily solve the problem by turning the TV off and on, but it's still unacceptable for a brand-new TV. I haven't called Toshiba's tech support yet to see about a solution. |
Excellent product but sound issues with HDMI

It's a good TV with great picture quality and a nice matte screen.
However, if passing sound over HDMI to the TV (or via the TV, say from a computer to a receiver via the TV when using this TV as a PC monitor) there is a problem: every few hours, the sound gets garbled/distorted and the only way to overcome this is to switch to another input then back to the input you were using (or unplug cable). Of course, this is annoying. Have contacted Toshiba but haven't heard back yet. It's not an isolated occurrence others also have this issue. |
Great TV

My choices in a 40" TV narrowed down to this set or the equivalent Samsung. The Samsungs were generally rated better then the Toshiba, but the price was also quite a bit higher.
Picture quality on this set is amazing. The sound is decent, though nothing to write home about. I hooked up a a fairly cheap home theatre surround sound system to use while watching a movie, but for normal TV, the built in sound from the Toshiba is acceptable.
The only issue I had with the TV, was that it apparantly gives off some IR signals that interfere with the remote control from Direct TV. The direct tv reciever did not respond to the remote control when the tv went to screensaver mode. Even though I could not believe this was the problem, I set the Dirct TV remote to work in RF mode (very easy to do actually!!) and everything worked perfectly. This is a problem with LCD TV's in general, not just Toshiba. The only other issue I have is that occasionally the sound sounds garbled, in which case i turn the tv off and then right back on..problem goes away. This may happen once every two or three weeks, and is not really an issue.
To summarize, I'm VERY pleased with this set and glad I saved the few hundred dollars over the Samsung set. |
Toshiba Regza 40'' 120Hz 1080p - A Contender

I have owned this TV for a few months now and feel that I know it well enough to give it a thorough review. Why I purchased this TV over all the others is worth mentioning. First, and foremost, the price is very attractive at first glance. And, it continue to be an attraction after looking at the reviews of other TVs that cost about the same. I almost bought a Panasonic plasma TV that was, at the time, only $100 more than this TV but was a full 10 inches bigger and had an outstanding review on Cnet. Forty inches was simply more suited for my living space.
Let's look at some of the positive aspects of this TV.
1. 120Hz technology is a plus for those who like it. With that said, using de-judder technology is an acquired taste and is potentially a detriment to picture quality as it may introduce unnatural artifacts. This Toshiba Regza has three options for de-judder - off, standard, and smooth. I find that using the standard de-judder creates a balance between improving picture quality and with avoiding artifacts. However, for blu-ray media, I use the smooth option since artifacts are harder to notice as resolution goes up.
2. Physical Build and Appearance
This TV is a traditional black build with a very matte screen. The Toshiba logo comes set to light up when the TV is powered on but this can be turned off in the settings menu. This TV looks very clean and makes use of a minimalist approach. The matte screen works wonderfully at.. being matte. It doesn't reflect light. In fact, I can only barely see faint reflections when the room is well lit and the TV is turned off.
3. Picture Quality
This TV supports up to 1080p resolution and does it well. 720p programming looks outstanding and clear while 1080p looks even better. While is has some drawbacks in the video quality, overall it is a good performer in high-def.
4. Settings and Menus
To some this may seem like a trivial aspect when shopping for a new TV when there are so many other features to take into account. This TV is a good example of how the quality of the menus can be a huge deal. There are several pre-determined settings for each particular kind of media: standard for typical programming; Movie for when the light level in the room is dim; Sports for high contrast and increased backlight; Game mode which has higher than normal contrast and turns off de-judder completely; and lastly Autoview which I never use. Ever. That is because the pre-set modes are already very well done and offer a great deal of options for fine-tuning the picture. You can actively change things like the level of dynamic contrast, and several other features that promise to improve picture quality such as noise reduction. It also has an abundance of color-correction options that go far beyond temperature.
I should also mention that as you change the active input to the TV, the settings for each input are saved. For example, if my Playstation 3 is set to HDMI 1 and is currently using some customized settings on Movie mode, it will be saved as such allowing me to freely change inputs without any fuss.
Now let's look at the negatives that will be encountered with this TV.
1. Standard Definition Picture Quality
The Hi-def quality of this TV is very good but the standard definition quality is only OK and, at times, is rather poor. Clarity and noise are the biggest problems but are never bad enough to intrude on the viewing experience. High-def does have some noise even with blu-ray media but somewhat rare. The de-juddering feature is prone to create artifacts in standard definition especially when using the highest level. I use standard without any problems.
2. Color Accuracy
The colors on this TV are relatively nice but are definitely not perfect. Skin tones range from being too pale to being too red. The black levels are also not as deep and black as they should be. Depending on the picture settings like brightness and backlight strength, the black can look superb. Overall, the color accuracy can be inaccurate but is always only slightly off. This can be easily addressed with the plethora of color correction features that come included.
3. Backlight Uniformity
Backlight uniformity is referring to how even the backlight brightness is all around the screen. This Toshiba Regza has very noticeable unevenness in backlight brightness around the corners which are much brighter than the center of the screen. I can easily notice this during most viewing sessions regardless of media type and viewing mode. Strangely enough, this actually comes and goes so it's not always there.
To summarize, the Toshiba Regza is a quality TV that boasts a great deal of features with its share of shortcomings. At the price, this is a great deal for anyone interested in a TV with de-judder technology. It comes with everything you would expect and maybe some basic features you didn't. |

| This isn't just a review of the television, it's a review of Toshiba customer service as well. So here's what happened: bought the tv, worked great for about a month, then the picture started deteriorating (vertical streaks) somewhat depressing that this happened, since it was new, but this sort of thing does happen, so no biggie. called toshiba, they gave me a number of an independent service provider to call. called them and the tv was picked up to be fixed. THAT WAS SIX WEEKS AGO! repeated calls to both toshiba and the service dept resulted in finger-pointing, toshiba claiming it was the service provider who was procrastinating, the service rep saying that toshiba needed to approve the fix and send them a part. after a month and a half of this i just want my money back (and no toshiba won't suck it up and just send me a new TV, the warranty only states that the tv needs to be "fixed" - no time constraints on that one, fyi!) Anyway, it's bad enough to part with a grand for something that doesn't work, but the delay here is really appalling. Now it must be said that the toshiba customer service people were unfailingly polite. But the issue is simple: gimme my fixed tv or gimme my money... neither seems to be in the offing. Ergo: STAY AWAY FROM TOSHIBA!!!!!! |

The black level for an LCD is very good. When the PS 3 Blue-Ray or play games to play, the picture is excellent. I have analog cable, because the picture is not as good, but better than I thought. DVB-T, I have also tested. The picture on DVB-T has a super quality. Unfortunately I get only eleven programs inside, but it’s getting there requires. Otherwise, I can only say that there are no defects, and the sound for a flat screen TV is also in order. I would buy it immediately!
